Three straight defeats send Vietnam U20s down after Asian qualifiers
U20 Việt Nam thua cả 3 trận vòng loại U20 châu Á 2027, đứng cuối bảng C và chính thức xuống hạng Phát triển. Hệ quả là mất suất tham dự vòng loại năm 2029, ảnh hưởng đến lứa U17 vừa giành vé dự World Cup. | Cross-checked: VuaBong.vn
Vietnam U20s ended their 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifying campaign with three straight defeats, failing to earn a single point and being officially relegated to the Development tier. This is the first time in history that a Vietnamese youth team has fallen into this situation, raising concerns among experts and fans about the future of Vietnamese youth football.
The final match in Group C saw Vietnam lose 3-1 to Iran, despite a determined performance. With this result, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's side finished bottom of the group with 0 points, alongside Afghanistan, Hong Kong (China), Laos, Bangladesh and the Philippines. Meanwhile, Cambodia and Turkmenistan, although also among the weakest teams, each collected 3 points, indicating the narrowing gap in Southeast Asia.
According to AFC regulations, the results of the 2027 qualifiers directly affect participation in the 2029 finals. By finishing 6th out of the 8 worst-performing teams, Vietnam is not only eliminated from the 2027 U20 Asian Cup but also loses the right to compete in the 2029 qualifiers. This means that the current U17 generation – which just qualified for the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup – will be unable to play in the 2029 U20 Asian Cup finals, because by then they will be U20 age but Vietnam has no slot.
This double consequence creates a development gap: while the VFF is investing heavily in the U17 cohort, their path to U20 level is blocked. Only by returning to the continental stage in 2031 through the Development tier can they re-enter. This is a strategic puzzle that the Vietnam Football Federation needs to solve soon to avoid wasting the resources already invested.
From a professional perspective, although Japanese coach Yutaka Ikeuchi was expected to bring an organized, possession-based style, the result of three straight defeats shows the team cannot yet compete with strong opponents like Iran. The absence of any standout player in the campaign is also a worrying sign about the quality of youth training.
Public pressure is mounting on the coaching staff and the VFF. The contrast between U17 success (World Cup qualification) and U20 failure (relegation) raises questions about the efficiency of the youth development system. Fans have reason to be disappointed, but the problem is not limited to a single tournament – it is a lack of linkage between age groups.
To remedy this, the VFF needs to build a clear roadmap for the current U17 generation, seeking high-quality friendly tournaments to replace the lost U20 Asian Cup qualifiers. At the same time, it needs to conduct a full review of the U20 program under coach Ikeuchi, deciding whether to continue or change direction towards the 2031 target.
Vietnamese youth football stands at an important crossroads. The U17 success is a positive signal, but without a long-term plan, those seeds will struggle to germinate at the continental level. The future of Vietnamese football depends on the right decisions between now and 2031.
