Sam Altshuler beats world No. 3 Simion Bobi to win first ITTF Para Challenger title in Spokane

SPOKANE (Washington) – When the scoreboard in the decisive set stopped at 12-10, few in the hall dared to believe Sam Altshuler had just come from behind to beat Simion Bobi, the world No. 3. He completed a 3-1 (12-10, 4-11, 13-11, 12-10) victory in the men's Class 6 final at the ITTF Para Challenger Spokane to earn his first Challenger-level gold medal. Three of the four sets ended at 12-10 or 13-11. In other words, this was not a match of finishing smashes, but a match of long rallies, patience and composure when the lead shrank to a single point. Altshuler only dipped in the second set, and Bobi took advantage to level. What stood out was how he responded immediately in the third set, saving the situation and closing a tense set with a 13-11 win. The victory gave the home player 300 points on the international para rankings, lifting him from just outside the top five into sixth place. People look at the points, but I have followed para events for years and noticed that such a jump rarely comes from luck. It comes from handling decisive points well, from choosing the right serve angles while tired, and from staying calm when the whole crowd is behind the opponent. Many will look at the 300 points and call it a breakthrough. But Altshuler's story does not start with a ranking. He said after the match: 'If you told me two years ago, I never would have thought I would be at this level.'
